How to Add Apple Pay to Your Shopify Store

Yes, Shopify accepts Apple Pay. It works with Shopify Payments and with other card payment providers that support it, and Shopify doesn't charge anything extra for it: you pay your normal card processing fees. Shoppers on an iPhone, iPad or Mac tap one button, confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or their passcode, and their card, shipping address and email come from their Apple Wallet instead of being typed in.

If you use Shopify Payments, accelerated checkouts like Apple Pay are usually switched on for you already. This guide shows how to check, how to turn it on if it isn't, where the button appears, and what to look at when it doesn't show up.

The short version

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Payments.
  2. In the section for your card payment provider (usually Shopify Payments), click Manage.
  3. In the Wallets section, select Apple Pay.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open your store in Safari on an iPhone and add something to the cart. The Apple Pay button should be at the top of checkout, in the Express checkout section.

Does Shopify support Apple Pay?

It does, on the online store, in Shopify POS, and in custom iOS apps built with Shopify's Buy SDK. The only sales channel Shopify lists as unsupported is the Buy Button channel, the embeddable buy button you can put on another website.

What you need on your side:

  • A card payment provider that supports Apple Pay. Shopify Payments does. Many third-party providers do too, and the ones that do show the option in the same place in your settings.
  • SSL on your store's domain. Shopify issues free SSL (TLS) certificates for every domain you add, so this is normally already true. If you connected a custom domain recently, check under Settings → Domains that it's secure.
  • Products that fit Apple's rules. Stores using Apple Pay have to follow Apple's acceptable use guidelines, which rule out some product categories.

What your customer needs: an Apple Pay-compatible iPhone, iPad or Mac, a card in their Wallet, and Safari. On a Mac without Touch ID, they confirm the payment on an iPhone that's nearby, signed in to the same iCloud account, with Bluetooth turned on.

Why the button sometimes doesn't show

Apple Pay is the button people most often tell us is "missing", and it's rarely broken. The button only appears when three things are true at once, and a merchant testing on a Windows laptop or in Chrome will never see it even when everything is set up correctly.

Three conditions that must all be true for the Apple Pay button to show on a Shopify store: Apple Pay is switched on for your payment provider, the shopper uses Safari on an Apple device with a card in Wallet, and nothing in checkout blocks it 01 · YOUR STORE Apple Pay is on Shopify Payments, or another card provider that supports it, with Apple Pay selected. 02 · THE SHOPPER Apple device An iPhone, iPad or Mac that supports Apple Pay, using Safari, with a card in Wallet. 03 · CHECKOUT Nothing blocks it Company name isn't a required field, and the sale isn't coming through the Buy Button channel. The button shows
All three have to be true. If any one of them isn't, the shopper simply sees the other payment options.

How to add Apple Pay to your Shopify store

The setting lives with your card payment provider, not in a separate Apple section. Here's the screen, simplified:

Simplified mockup of the Shopify admin payment provider settings: under Settings, Payments, Manage, the Wallets section lists Apple Pay (selected) and Google Pay, with a Save button SETTINGS › PAYMENTS Shopify Payments or your card provider › Manage Wallets Apple Pay Google Pay Wallet buttons appear in the Express checkout section and, if your theme allows, on product pages. Save
The Wallets section of your card provider's settings. Apple Pay is one checkbox.

On a computer

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Payments.
  2. In the section for your credit card payment provider, click Manage.
  3. In the Wallets section, select Apple Pay.
  4. Click Save.

In the Shopify app

The path is the same: open Settings → Payments, tap Manage on your card provider, select Apple Pay under Wallets, and save.

If your store is in France

With Shopify Payments in France the setting is one level deeper: Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage, then Advanced settings, then Manage next to Wallets, where you can activate Apple Pay.

If you use Stripe or another provider

With Stripe, you accept Apple Pay's terms in your Stripe dashboard, and Shopify handles domain verification for you; you don't need to upload a verification file. If you use Cybersource, Authorize.net or First Data Payeezy and don't see Apple Pay at all, ask your processor to turn on network tokenization first.

Worth knowingApple Pay doesn't add a fee of its own. Payments are charged at the same rate as any other card payment through your provider, and they're paid out, refunded and reported the same way.

Where Apple Pay appears on your store

Apple Pay is an accelerated checkout, like Shop Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. Those buttons can show up in two places:

  • At checkout. In the Express checkout section at the very top. Shopify orders the buttons dynamically to show each customer the fastest option, so not everyone sees them in the same order.
  • On product pages. Next to Add to cart, as accelerated checkout buttons. These let a shopper buy one variant of one product and skip the cart entirely. Which branded button shows depends on your payment settings and on the customer's device, browser and history, so an iPhone user may see Apple Pay while someone on Android sees Google Pay.

To turn the product page buttons on or off, go to Online Store → Themes, open the theme editor, go to your product template, select the buy buttons in the product information section, and tick or untick Show accelerated checkout buttons. If your theme doesn't have that setting, it needs updating or a small code change. You can't restyle branded buttons like Apple Pay, only the unbranded "Buy it now" one.

Showing Apple Pay in the cart drawer takes custom code, so most stores leave it for the checkout.

Shopify Payments or a third-party provider?

Shopify Payments Third-party card provider
Apple Pay available Yes If the provider supports it
Where to switch it on Settings → Payments → Manage → Wallets Same place, if offered; some need setup on the provider's side first
Extra fee for Apple Pay None None from Shopify; check your provider's rates
Subscriptions paid with Apple Pay Yes, with Visa or Mastercard No

Apple Pay in person with Shopify POS

If you sell in person, Shopify POS takes Apple Pay as a contactless payment on its supported card readers, such as the WisePad 3 and Tap & Chip reader, and through Tap to Pay on iPhone, which turns your iPhone into the reader. The customer holds their phone or watch near the reader and confirms as usual.

Test it before you rely on it

  1. Use an iPhone with a card in Wallet, and open your store in Safari. Not Chrome, and not a desktop that isn't a Mac.
  2. Add a product to the cart and go to checkout. Apple Pay should be in the Express checkout section.
  3. If you turned on product page buttons, check a product page too.
  4. Place a small real order with Apple Pay, check that it arrives in Orders with the right shipping address, then refund it.

Troubleshooting

Apple Pay isn't in my payment settings

Your card provider may not support it, or may need something switched on first. With Stripe, accept Apple Pay's terms in the Stripe dashboard. With Cybersource, Authorize.net or First Data Payeezy, ask for network tokenization.

It's switched on but I can't see the button

Check the device first: an Apple device, Safari, and a card in Wallet. Then check the checkout form options under Settings → Checkout: if Company name is set to Required, Apple Pay won't show. Set it to Optional or Don't include. Remember too that Apple Pay doesn't appear for Buy Button sales.

The button does nothing on a MacBook

If the laptop is closed and running on an external monitor, the button can be unresponsive. Open the lid. If the Mac relies on a nearby iPhone, both need Bluetooth on and the same iCloud account.

A customer's discount code didn't apply

With Apple Pay, a discount code only applies if the customer enters it before tapping the Apple Pay button. If a customer asks, tell them to enter the code in checkout first and then pay with Apple Pay.

The payment was declined

Per-transaction limits for Apple Pay are set by the customer's bank and card brand, not by Shopify. Suggest another card or payment method.

Common questions

Does Shopify take Apple Pay?

Yes. It's available through Shopify Payments and through other card providers that support it, on your online store and in Shopify POS.

Does Apple Pay cost extra on Shopify?

No. Shopify doesn't charge an extra fee for Apple Pay. You pay the normal processing rate of your payment provider.

Can Android or Windows customers use Apple Pay?

No. Apple Pay needs a compatible Apple device. Those customers see the other options you offer, such as Shop Pay, Google Pay or card fields.

Is Apple Pay the same as Shop Pay?

No. Both are accelerated checkouts, but Shop Pay is Shopify's own and saves the customer's details with Shop, while Apple Pay uses the card and address in the customer's Apple Wallet. Most stores offer both, and Shopify decides which to show first.

Can customers pay for subscriptions with Apple Pay?

Yes, if you use Shopify Payments and the customer's card is Visa or Mastercard.

Why don't I see Apple Pay when I test my own store?

Almost always because of the device or browser. Test in Safari on an iPhone with a card in Wallet. If it still isn't there, check the Company name setting in checkout.

Where to go next

Apple Pay removes typing, but it can't fix a checkout that loses people for other reasons. If shoppers are dropping off at the payment step, why Shopify customers leave at the payment step covers the usual causes. For the rest of the checkout, see how to customize the checkout page, and for Shopify's own wallet, why the Shop button isn't the enemy.
