Most Shopify themes print a small “Powered by Shopify” link in the footer, next to your copyright line. Plenty of merchants would rather it wasn't there: it's someone else's brand on your storefront, and on a carefully designed footer it can look like an afterthought. Removing it is allowed, takes a couple of minutes, and in most themes doesn't need any code.
There are three ways to do it. Try them in this order and stop at the first one that works.
Method 1: Untick it in the theme editor
Some newer themes, including Shopify's Horizon theme family, have a setting for this. In Horizon it lives in the footer's Copyright block:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize on your theme.
- Scroll to the footer and select the Copyright block (it's the one with your store name and the year).
- Uncheck Show “Powered by Shopify”.
- Click Save.
If your theme doesn't have a checkbox like this, move on to method 2.
Method 2: Edit default theme content
This is Shopify's own recommended method and works for most themes, including Dawn. The words “Powered by Shopify” are stored as theme content, so you can replace them without touching code:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes.
- Find the theme you want to edit, click the … menu, and choose Edit default theme content.
- In the search box, type powered.
- In the Powered by Shopify box, enter a single space.
- Click Save.
Why a space and not an empty box? Shopify's instructions specify a single space: an empty box can let the theme fall back to its default text, while a space replaces it with something invisible.
You can do the same thing from the Shopify mobile app: tap Online Store, then Manage all themes, then Edit default theme content, search for “powered”, and enter a space in the Powered by Shopify box.
Method 3: Edit the theme code
If the message is still there after method 2, your theme outputs it directly in its code. Before you edit anything, duplicate the theme (… menu → Duplicate) so you have a copy to fall back to.
- From Online Store → Themes, click the … menu on your theme and choose Edit code.
- In the Sections folder, open
footer.liquid. - Press Ctrl+F (Windows) or Command+F (Mac) and search for
powered_by_link. - Delete the Liquid tag
{{ powered_by_link }}. Leave the surrounding HTML as it is unless you're sure what it does. - Click Save and check your storefront.
In some themes the tag sits in a different file, such as a footer snippet or block. If footer.liquid doesn't have it, use the code editor's search across all files. And keep in mind that code edits can be dropped when you update your theme to a new version if they conflict with the update, so check the footer again after each theme update.
Before you remove it: should you?
It's purely a matter of taste. The link doesn't affect how your store works, and removing it doesn't break anything. Shopify's own help center explains how to do it. Some merchants leave it because shoppers recognize Shopify and associate it with a safe checkout; others remove it because they want every pixel of the footer to be their brand. Either is fine.
If you do remove it, use the space for something that helps customers instead: your contact email, a short returns promise, or links to your shipping and refund policies.
If it comes back
- You switched or updated themes. Theme content and settings belong to each theme. A new theme starts with the notice back on, so repeat the steps on it before you publish it.
- You left the box empty. Enter a single space instead, as above.
- You edited the wrong theme. Make sure you changed the live (published) theme, not a draft copy.
- An app or custom code adds it. Rare, but some footer apps output their own version. Check the app's settings.
