You've seen them on nearly every website: "Accept all cookies", "Reject", "Manage options", or something vague enough that you close the pop-up and move on. Your customers see them on your store too. A confusing cookie banner doesn't just annoy people. It makes your store look less trustworthy at the moment they're deciding whether to buy.
This post covers what cookie pop-ups are for, what a clear one looks like, and how to set one up on Shopify.
Why cookie pop-ups exist
Cookies are small files a website stores in the browser to remember things. They come in two broad kinds:
- Essential cookies make the store work: they keep items in the cart, remember a login, and get the customer through checkout.
- Non-essential cookies do everything else: analytics, personalization, and advertising pixels that measure campaigns or follow people around the web.
Privacy laws such as the EU's GDPR, and the UK's version of it, require a visitor's consent before non-essential cookies are used. That's what the pop-up is for. In those regions, EU regulators have been clear that scrolling or simply carrying on browsing doesn't count as consent. The visitor has to actually choose.
What happens when a visitor ignores the banner
On a store set up properly, nothing bad happens to the shopper. They can browse and buy as normal. What changes is on your side: until they choose, non-essential tracking waits. That means the visitor may not show up in some analytics, and your ad pixels may not see their visit. It's the trade the law asks for, and it's why a banner people actually understand is worth having: clear choices get more of them.
What a clear cookie banner looks like
- One plain sentence. Say what cookies are used for in words a customer would use. Skip the legal paragraph; that's what your policy is for.
- Equal buttons. Accept and Decline the same size and style. A bright Accept next to a faint text link to decline is exactly the kind of design that confuses people, and regulators look for it.
- A real choice. A way to allow some purposes (analytics, say) but not others (marketing).
- A link to the details. Your privacy policy, one tap away.
And keep it out of the way. A bar along the bottom that doesn't cover the product or the Add to cart button beats a full-screen pop-up on a phone.
Start with Shopify's built-in cookie banner
Shopify has a cookie banner of its own, and for many stores it's all you need. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Customer privacy → Cookie banner.
- With automated privacy settings on (the default for new stores), Shopify sets up the banner for visitors in the UK and EEA if you sell to those markets, and keeps it updated as your settings change.
- It shows on your storefront, cart, checkout and customer account pages, with options to accept, decline or manage preferences.
- You can change its position, colors and text, and choose extra regions where it should appear.
- In the regions you've set up, Shopify only collects non-essential data after the visitor consents.
If you use a different consent app instead, it should connect through Shopify's Customer Privacy API, so Shopify and your apps respect the same choice.
When you want a lighter, simpler bar
Some merchants want a cookie bar that matches their store exactly without much setup. That's why we build Cookie Bar, a free app. It's designed to load without slowing your store down, picks up your store's styling automatically, and in the theme editor you can set it to appear at the top or bottom of the page, change its colors and text, and point it at your privacy policy (by default, /policies/privacy-policy). It works from your Shopify privacy settings, so it only appears when those are switched on, and it doesn't show again to visitors who've already given consent within the past year.
The app can use explicit consent, where the bar stays until the visitor clicks I agree, or implied consent, where it disappears when they keep browsing. For visitors in the EU and UK, use explicit consent.
You can install Cookie Bar from the Shopify App Store, and the Cookie Bar help centre covers setup and troubleshooting.
Common questions
Do I need a cookie pop-up on my Shopify store?
If you sell to customers in the EU, EEA or UK and use analytics or marketing cookies, you need their consent first, and a banner is how you ask. Shopify's built-in banner handles those regions by default.
Can I make the cookie pop-up less annoying?
Yes. Keep it to one sentence, put it at the bottom of the screen, and make declining as easy as accepting. Visitors decide faster when the choice is obvious.
Why doesn't my cookie banner show up?
You may be browsing from a region where it isn't set to appear, or you've already answered it in that browser. Try a private window, and check the regions under Settings → Customer privacy → Cookie banner.
