Updated September 2026
Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September in the US, and for many shoppers the long weekend is the unofficial end of summer: a moment to pick up end-of-season deals, back-to-school basics and a few things for fall. For an online store it's a chance to clear summer stock and introduce new lines, as long as the sale is planned rather than improvised on Friday night.
Here's a simple plan that works whether you run a big promotion or a small one.
Know who's shopping
Labor Day shoppers are mostly looking for end-of-season sales. Some are finishing back-to-school lists, some are buying for the home, and a few are starting early on gifts. That tells you what to lead with: the summer stock you want to move, anything that fits the start of fall, and products that make sense for the new school year. Our guide to the back-to-school rush covers that side in more depth.
Plan backwards from the Monday
- Three weeks out: pick one offer. One clear deal ("20% off all summer styles") beats five overlapping ones. Check stock on the products you'll feature, and decide what happens when they sell out.
- Two weeks out: build and schedule. Create the discount in Shopify and set its Active dates, including an end date, so it switches on and off by itself. If you're marking prices down instead, set the Compare-at price above the sale price so the saving shows. If you're running more than one discount, check how they combine; stacking discounts explains the rules.
- The week before: tell your list first. Give email subscribers early access a day or two ahead. They're your most likely buyers, and it spreads orders out.
- Sale weekend: watch, don't tinker. Check stock and orders once or twice a day. Avoid changing prices mid-sale unless something is wrong.
- Tuesday after: end cleanly. Make sure banners and discounts are off, then thank buyers and suggest something that goes with what they bought.
Get the storefront ready
Say it at the top. Put the offer where every visitor sees it. Most Shopify themes have a built-in announcement bar you can edit in the theme editor. If you want it to switch on and off by itself, add a countdown, or show different messages in turn, Announcer & Countdown, our announcement bar app, lets you schedule a bar to go live and expire on set dates.
Add a seasonal touch, lightly. A bit of decoration signals that something's on. Our Holiday Decorations app adds fireworks, twinkling lights or falling emoji as blocks in the theme editor; fireworks suit a long weekend. Use one effect, not all of them.
Make the sale easy to find. Link the banner to a collection of everything on offer, not the homepage, and add that collection to your main menu for the weekend.
Check it on a phone. Most of your visitors will be on one. Tap through from the banner to checkout and make sure the discount applies. Page speed matters more when traffic spikes; why speed matters covers the basics, and our Turbo app preloads pages so moving between them feels quicker.
Run the campaign
- Email in three sends: a heads-up the week before, the launch, and a "last day" on Monday. Segment if you can: past buyers of summer items get the clearance message, everyone else gets the new-season one.
- Social: show the actual products and the actual price. A sneak peek a few days early builds more interest than a generic "big sale coming" post.
- A real deadline: "Ends Monday at midnight" is honest urgency. Then end it. A sale that quietly runs into Wednesday teaches customers to ignore your deadlines.
After the weekend
Don't stop at the thank-you email. Look at what sold and what didn't: the leftovers are your next clearance, and the best sellers tell you what to stock more of next year. Follow up with first-time buyers with something that genuinely goes with their order. The same plan works for every holiday on the calendar, from Mother's Day to Black Friday; only the offer changes.
