Shopify Discounts Can Finally Stack, and Your Promo Calendar Just Got Simpler

Shopify Discounts Can Finally Stack, and Your Promo Calendar Just Got Simpler

There's a support ticket every Shopify merchant has either sent or almost sent. It goes something like: "I have a sitewide sale running and I gave my affiliate a code, but when customers use the code the sale price disappears. Why?"

The answer, for years, was that Shopify only allowed one product discount per item. Whichever discount won, the other one vanished. So merchants got creative in ways nobody enjoyed. Manually adjusted prices before a sale. Duplicate discounts doing math that already included the other discount. Apologetic FAQ pages explaining why the code "doesn't work" during sales. We've seen all of it.

As of mid July, that limitation is gone. Multiple product discounts can now apply to the same item.

How it works

The setup is refreshingly simple. You tag your discounts to group them, something like loyalty, seasonal, or affiliate. Then you decide which groups are allowed to combine. Once that's set, everything happens automatically at checkout, following your rules.

So the classic scenario finally works the way customers assume it should: 20% off the winter collection runs sitewide, your affiliate's $10 off boots code is live, a customer adds winter boots and enters the code, and both discounts apply. No conflict, no disappearing sale price, no confused email the next morning.

This covers combining automatic discounts with each other and combining discount codes with automatic discounts, all on the same line item.

The part worth thinking about

The mechanics are easy. The strategy is where it gets interesting, because control over what combines is really control over your margins.

Before this update, the platform protected you from over-discounting by simply refusing to stack. Now the guardrail is whatever you configure. A loyalty discount stacking on a seasonal sale stacking on an affiliate code is three cuts into the same item, and it will happen exactly as often as your combination rules allow. Our advice: map out your discount groups on paper before you touch the settings. Decide the maximum depth you're comfortable with on any single product and work backward from there.

It's also worth a fresh look at how your promotions are structured overall. Plenty of stores built elaborate workarounds for the old single-discount world, and some of those workarounds can now be dismantled. Fewer hacks, fewer things to remember before every sale event. We spend a lot of time in this corner of Shopify through our work on volume pricing and bundle offers, and honest housekeeping here pays off more than merchants expect.

One practical note before your next big promo: test the combinations in a real cart. The rules apply automatically, which is great when they're right and expensive when they're not. Ten minutes of checkout testing beats discovering a triple-stack on your bestseller mid-campaign.
