A fixed subscription box ships the same thing every month. A build-a-box subscription lets the customer choose what goes in: three coffees this month, two next month and a mug; a snack box with their own mix; a recipe kit with five dinners picked from a menu. It's the model shoppers like best for variety products, and it's the one that gives them a reason to stay when they'd otherwise get bored and cancel.
This guide covers how to sell build-a-box subscriptions on Shopify: what Shopify's built-in tools can and can't do, the decisions to make before you set anything up, and a step-by-step setup with Pasilobus Subscriptions, the subscription app we build.
The short version
- Shopify's free Subscriptions app sells fixed recurring products, not boxes customers assemble. Shopify's help also says bundles aren't compatible with it.
- A build-a-box app lets customers pick items for each delivery from the products you choose, within a minimum and maximum you set.
- Decide four things first: box size, how items are counted, how the price works, and how long before billing edits should lock.
- Setup takes one purchase option with Build-a-box switched on, plus the subscription widget on your product page.
What a build-a-box subscription is
There are three common ways to run a subscription box, and they need different tools:
| Model | Who picks the items | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed subscription | Nobody: same product every time | A bag of the house coffee every month |
| Curated box | You, each cycle | A surprise book box |
| Build-a-box | The customer, within your rules | Pick 3–5 snacks for each monthly box |
Build-a-box sits between the other two. You control the menu and the box size; the customer controls the mix. It suits recipe kits, snack and coffee boxes, pet food with several flavors, beauty refills and any product line where people enjoy choosing.
Can you do build-a-box with Shopify's built-in tools?
Not really. Shopify has two free apps that look close:
- Shopify Subscriptions adds a subscribe option to products so they renew on a schedule. It's a good fit for fixed subscriptions. Its documentation doesn't describe a mode where customers assemble each box, and Shopify's help states that bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app.
- Shopify Bundles creates fixed bundles and multipacks: a set group of products sold together. That covers a one-time gift set, not a recurring box the customer changes.
If your box is always the same, start with Shopify Subscriptions: it's free and made by Shopify. If customers should choose what's inside, you need an app with a build-a-box mode.
Decide these before you set anything up
Most build-a-box problems come from rules that weren't decided up front. Settle these four and the setup takes minutes.
1. Box size: exact or a range?
An exact size ("exactly 5 items") is simpler to pack and price. A range ("3 to 5") gives customers more freedom and suits products with different prices. Pick one you can fulfill every cycle.
2. How items are counted
Counting by total quantity means two bags of the same coffee count as two. Counting by distinct products means every item has to be different, which is how you force variety in a tasting box.
3. How the price works
With a build-a-box plan, the box price follows what's in it: if a customer swaps in a more expensive product, that order costs more, and adding items raises the recurring total. Your subscriber discount applies to whatever they choose. If you'd rather charge one flat price per box, keep the eligible products at similar prices, or use an exact box size so totals stay predictable.
4. When edits lock
You need a moment when the box stops changing so you can order stock and pick orders. That's the lock window: a number of hours before billing after which the customer can't edit that box. Match it to your real fulfillment lead time. 48 hours works for many small shops; a kitchen that preps recipe kits may need longer.
How a build-a-box subscription runs
The customer pays for the first box at checkout, which also starts the subscription. After that, each renewal is charged and the order created automatically on schedule, and you fulfill it like any other order.
Set up build-a-box with Pasilobus Subscriptions
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store. It opens inside your Shopify admin.
- Add the subscription widget to your product page. Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize, open a product template, click Add block and choose the subscription widget from the Apps list. Place it near the Add to cart button and save. You only do this once.
- Create a purchase option. In the app, choose Create from a template. Subscribe & Save is the usual starting point; Prepaid suits gift boxes (more on that below).
- Add the products customers can choose from. These are the box's menu: every product attached to the plan is a possible pick.
- Set delivery frequencies and the discount. Offer one cadence or several (every month, every two weeks), and a percentage, fixed amount or fixed price discount, or none.
- Turn on Allow product changes, then Build-a-box. Set your min and max items, choose how items are counted, and set Lock changes before billing in hours.
- Save, then test by subscribing to your own box and building it from your customer account.
Two optional settings are worth a look. Allow per-order changes lets customers change a single upcoming box without touching their regular selection, for a one-off extra item or a holiday swap. And in the plan's terms you choose which actions customers can take on their own: pause, skip, cancel, change frequency and swap products each have their own switch.
What your customers see
Subscribers build their box from the account area on your store, the same place they see their orders. They see a running count against your limits and can't save a box that breaks them:
A few details that save support emails:
- Inside the lock window, the box shows as closed for changes.
- If a customer changes their delivery frequency, any one-off changes to upcoming boxes reset to their regular box. They're warned before that happens.
- Every change they make is confirmed by email.
Keep subscribers once they've signed up
A build-a-box plan already gives bored customers something to do besides cancel. The rest of retention comes from making the alternatives to cancelling easy:
- Let them skip and pause. Someone going on holiday who can skip a box doesn't need to cancel.
- Let them change frequency. If boxes pile up, every six weeks beats cancelled.
- Leave failed payments to the app. When a renewal charge fails, the app retries it automatically and emails the customer to update their card.
- Protect big discounts with a commitment. Commit & Save sets a minimum number of orders before the customer can cancel, while still letting them pause, skip and swap.
If your boxes need time to arrive on schedule, the fulfillment lead time setting creates each order a few days early. That also charges the customer a few days early, so mention it in your FAQ.
Build-a-box as a gift
Subscription boxes are a popular gift, and two settings make them work. A Prepaid plan charges once up front for a set run of deliveries ("3 months of snacks"), and a maximum number of cycles ends the plan automatically so the buyer isn't billed forever. To send a gift subscription, or one box to several people, Pasilobus Subscriptions works with Multi Ship: the customer splits the subscription across addresses at checkout, and each address becomes its own recurring delivery. Our guide to shipping gifts to multiple addresses covers the checkout side.

If something doesn't work
- No subscribe option on the product page. Check the product is attached to a purchase option and that the subscription widget block is added to the product template you're viewing.
- A customer can't save their box. It's outside your min or max, or it's counting distinct products and they've picked the same one twice.
- A customer can't edit next month's box. It's inside the lock window. Lower the hours if customers keep hitting it.
The Subscriptions help centre covers every setting in detail.
Common questions
Can Shopify do build-a-box subscriptions without an app?
No. Shopify Subscriptions renews fixed products, and Shopify Bundles makes fixed bundles; neither lets a customer assemble a recurring box. You need a subscription app with a build-a-box mode.
How do customers change what's in their box?
From their account on your store. They pick items within your limits and save; inside the lock window before billing, that box can't be changed.
Does the price change when customers pick different items?
Yes. The order price follows the products in the box, and your subscriber discount applies to them. Keep eligible products at similar prices, or use an exact box size, if you want predictable totals.
Can I force customers to pick different items?
Yes. Count items by distinct products instead of total quantity, and every item in the box has to be different.
Can I sell a build-a-box subscription as a gift?
Yes. Use a prepaid plan so the buyer pays once for a set number of boxes, and set a maximum number of cycles so it ends on its own.
What happens when a card fails on renewal?
The app retries the charge automatically and emails the customer to update their payment method. If every retry fails, they get a final notice and you can see the subscription in your admin.
