How to Set Minimum and Maximum Order Quantities on Shopify

Updated September 2026

Shopify can limit order quantities in three built-in ways, and each one covers a narrow case. The add-to-cart limit caps how many of each variant anyone can put in a cart. B2B quantity rules set a minimum, maximum and increment, but only for wholesale buyers who log in through a company. Discount and shipping minimums only decide whether someone qualifies for a deal. For anything else, such as a two-per-order cap on a drop, cases of six for retail shoppers, or a minimum order value that actually blocks checkout, you need an app that uses Shopify's checkout validation.

This guide shows what each native option does and how to set it up, then where an app takes over. We build one of those apps, Order Limits, and we'll say so when we get there.

The short version

You want to… Built into Shopify Needs an app
Stop anyone buying huge quantities of one variant Yes: Add-to-cart limit, one number for the whole store For a different cap on each product
Set min, max and multiples for wholesale buyers Yes: B2B quantity rules on catalogs For customers without a company profile
Cap a product at 2 per order for everyone No Yes
Sell only in packs of 6, 12, 24 B2B only For retail shoppers
Require a minimum order value before checkout Shopify Plus only, through the Checkout Blocks app On other plans
Give free shipping or a discount above a threshold Yes: shipping rate conditions and discount minimums No
Limit a whole collection, like “1 item from Limited Edition” No Yes

1. The add-to-cart limit (every store has one)

Most merchants don't know this setting exists, and it's already switched on. It sets the most of each product a customer can add to their cart in one order. Shopify turned it on to stop carts revealing your exact stock level, which is what happens when someone types 9999 and the cart quietly drops to what you have.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
  2. In Advanced preferences, click Add-to-cart limit.
  3. Change the number, or turn the limit off. It has to be a whole number.

Shopify picks the starting value from your order history. Stores with fewer than 250 sales get a recommended limit of 50.

The limit applies to each variant separately. With a limit of 30 on a T-shirt in three colors, a customer can still buy 30 of each color. It's one number for the whole store, and it doesn't apply to POS carts, draft orders, B2B customers, or products that don't track inventory or keep selling when out of stock. It's a safety net, not a merchandising tool.

2. B2B quantity rules: minimum, maximum and increment

If you sell wholesale, this is the native feature you want. Since April 2026, Shopify's B2B tools, including quantity rules and volume pricing, are available on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans as well as Plus. Your store must be using the new Shopify Markets.

Quantity rules live on a B2B catalog and apply to product variants:

  • Increment: buyers purchase in multiples, such as 10 when your product comes boxed in tens.
  • Minimum: the fewest of an item that can be bought at one time.
  • Maximum: the most that can be bought at one time.

To add them:

  1. Go to Markets → Catalogs and open the catalog.
  2. In Products and pricing, click Manage, then Manage products and pricing.
  3. In the Quantity rules column for a variant, click + Add.
  4. Enter the Increment, Minimum and Maximum, and save.

Two limits to plan around. Rules are per variant, so a buyer can't combine sizes or colors to reach a minimum. And they only apply to customers buying as a company. A retail shopper, or a wholesale buyer who checks out without logging in to their company account, doesn't see them. Volume pricing sits in the same place, with up to 10 price breaks per product, and each break must be above the minimum and a multiple of the increment.

Worth knowingOn Basic, Grow and Advanced you can have up to three active catalogs across your B2B markets. Assigning a catalog directly to a specific company location is a Plus feature. If you set up quantity rules and a buyer doesn't see them, check which catalog their company location actually gets.

3. Minimum order amount: what Shopify can and can't do

This is the one people search for most, and the answer depends on what you mean by “minimum.”

  • A minimum for free shipping. In Settings → Shipping and delivery, open a shipping profile, add a rate priced at 0, click Add conditions, choose Based on order price and enter the minimum. Orders below it simply pay for shipping.
  • A minimum for a discount. Every discount type has minimum purchase requirements: a Minimum purchase amount or a Minimum quantity of items. The amount counts product prices only, not shipping or tax.
  • A minimum that blocks checkout. On Shopify Plus, the Checkout Blocks app can set order value limits and block orders outside them, for all customers or only B2B companies. On other plans you need an app that adds a checkout rule.

The first two don't stop anyone buying. They reward a bigger order. If a $12 order genuinely loses you money, you need the third.

4. Per-order caps, packs and collection limits for everyone

Everything else, including retail min and max per product, multiples for non-wholesale customers, preset pack sizes, collection-wide limits and cart-wide item counts, comes from apps. They work in two layers, and a good one uses both:

Two layers of quantity limits: the storefront quantity selector only offers valid amounts, then Shopify's checkout validation blocks any cart that still breaks the rule. TWO LAYERS OF LIMITS 01 · STOREFRONT The selector only offers valid amounts − 12 + Buy in multiples of 6 + skips from 6 to 12 to 18 02 · CHECKOUT Shopify checks again and blocks bad carts Cart link with 7 units Order stopped with a message Cart with 12 units Order goes through Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules
The storefront guides the customer toward a valid quantity. Checkout validation is the part that can't be bypassed.

The second layer matters. Shopify lets apps from the App Store run a cart and checkout validation function on any plan. You'll see it in Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules after you install the app, and you switch it on there with Add rule, then Save and Turn on. An app that only changes the quantity box on the product page can be bypassed by a cart link, an old cart or a slow-loading script. A checkout rule can't. Custom-built apps that use these functions are limited to Shopify Plus, which is why most stores use an App Store app.

By default, checkout rules also apply to draft orders, and you can override them before completing a draft. That's useful when you take a phone order that breaks your usual minimum on purpose.

Setting limits with Order Limits

We built Order Limits for the cases Shopify doesn't cover. It sets a minimum, maximum and step for products, variants or collections; offers preset pack sizes as a dropdown instead of a free quantity box; and sets cart limits on item count or order value. Each rule is checked again at Shopify's checkout, so it can't be skipped. A typical setup:

  1. Install the app, then in Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, make sure the Order Limits embed is on and save.
  2. Go to Rules → Create rule and pick the products or variants.
  3. Set Minimum quantity, Maximum quantity and Step / increment. You can combine them: minimum 2, maximum 20, step 2 allows 2, 4, 6 and so on up to 20.
  4. For fixed pack sizes, turn on Preset quantities and enter the values, like 6, 12, 24. Presets above your available stock are hidden automatically.
  5. For a whole collection, choose Collection limit as the rule type. When a product has its own rule too, the stricter one wins.
  6. For order-wide rules, go to Settings → Cart Limits and set minimum or maximum items or order value. The checkout button stays disabled until the cart meets them.

The free plan includes five rules with min, max and step, presets, cart limits and checkout validation. The paid plan adds unlimited rules, weight limits, scheduling and inventory-aware maximums, which lower the cap automatically when stock runs short. Different limits for tagged customers (for example wholesale or vip) are also available on a paid plan; guests only see rules that don't target a tag.

Picking the right limit

  • Limited drop: a maximum of 1 or 2 per order on the product, or a collection limit across the whole drop. Say so on the product page (“Limit 2 per order”) so checkout never surprises anyone. Our guide to running a Shopify drop covers the rest.
  • Sold by the case: a step of 6 or 12, or presets if only certain pack sizes exist.
  • Wholesale with logged-in buyers: start with Shopify's B2B quantity rules.
  • Free samples: a maximum per sample product, plus a collection limit on the samples collection.
  • Small orders lose money: a minimum order value at checkout, or a free-shipping threshold if you'd rather reward than block. Our guide on getting customers to buy more per order has gentler options.

Per-order limits don't stop someone placing a second order. If resellers are the problem, review drop orders before you fulfill them and cancel duplicates.

Troubleshooting

  • B2B rules don't show. The customer must be logged in and buying for a company location that gets that catalog. Retail sessions never see B2B rules.
  • The add-to-cart limit seems to do nothing. It doesn't apply to products that don't track inventory or that continue selling when out of stock, and it counts each variant separately.
  • An app's limit shows on the product page but not at checkout. Check Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules and make sure the app's rule is turned on.
  • The quantity box looks normal. The app embed is probably off. Turn it on in the theme editor under App embeds and save. Then try a private window, since cached theme files can hide changes.
  • Customers see an error at checkout. Usually an old cart, a direct checkout link or a script that loaded late. That's the checkout rule doing its job. Make sure the message tells them what to change.

Common questions

Can I set a minimum order quantity on Shopify without an app?

For wholesale buyers, yes: B2B quantity rules include a minimum, maximum and increment, and are available on every plan. For retail customers, no. Shopify's add-to-cart limit only sets a maximum, and discount minimums only control who gets a discount.

How do I limit quantity per customer on Shopify?

Natively, the add-to-cart limit caps each variant per order, store-wide. For a different cap on each product, or a limit across a collection, use an app with checkout validation. Most apps, ours included, limit per order, so a determined buyer can place a second order. Review and cancel duplicate orders if that matters for your drop.

Can I set a minimum order amount on Shopify?

You can require a minimum for free shipping or for a discount on any plan. Blocking checkout below a minimum needs Checkout Blocks on Shopify Plus, or an App Store app that adds a checkout rule on other plans.

Can I sell a product only in multiples, like packs of 6?

Yes. B2B catalogs have an increment rule. For retail customers, use an app with a step setting or preset pack sizes.

Do quantity limits apply to draft orders and POS?

The add-to-cart limit doesn't apply to POS carts or draft orders. App checkout rules apply to draft orders by default, and you can override them when you complete the draft. Our guide to Shopify draft orders explains how drafts work.

Get started

Check your Add-to-cart limit first, since it's already on. If you sell wholesale, set up B2B quantity rules. For everything else, install Order Limits from the Shopify App Store. It's free for up to five rules, and the Order Limits help center walks through each setting.
