Shopify Isn't Just for Small Stores

There's a perception that Shopify is a starter platform: something you use to launch a store and prove an idea, then graduate from to a "real" enterprise system once the business gets serious. We hear it from merchants thinking about moving to Shopify, and from merchants already on it who wonder whether they'll outgrow it.

It hasn't been true for years. Some of the best-known consumer brands run on Shopify, and many of them moved there from the enterprise platforms that were supposed to be the next step up. Here are a few whose stories Shopify has published, and what they mean for a store of any size.

Gymshark

Gymshark is the example people cite most, and for good reason. The fitness apparel brand was on Adobe Commerce (Magento) when its site went down for eight hours on Black Friday, costing an estimated £100,000 in the most important sales window of the year. It moved to Shopify Plus.

The point isn't that Magento was bad for them. It's that on Shopify, whether the site can handle the traffic is Shopify's problem rather than yours.

Allbirds

Allbirds runs its online store and its physical shops on Shopify, with Shopify POS in store. With ship-from-store, its network of 31 retail stores fulfills online orders, which let it stock more of its best sellers in store and cut the shipping and labor that end-of-season returns to the warehouse used to cost.

For merchants wondering whether Shopify can handle both a website and real shops from one set of inventory and customer data, that's the answer.

Steve Madden

Steve Madden unified its global digital presence on Shopify with the agency RunDTC: 30 sites across three brands, localized content under one brand system, and a 16% increase in conversion rates after the move.

Cole Haan

Cole Haan, the footwear and lifestyle brand founded in 1928, moved from Salesforce Commerce Cloud to Shopify, as Shopify's president shared. That isn't a startup picking its first platform. It's an established global brand that could go anywhere, choosing Shopify.

Mattel, Heinz, Spanx, Brooklinen

The list crosses industries. Mattel is bringing its portfolio of brands to Shopify using Commerce Components, Shopify's offering for the largest retailers. Heinz launched its first direct-to-consumer store, Heinz to Home, on Shopify Plus during the 2020 lockdown. Spanx and Brooklinen are among the brands on Shopify's enterprise page. These are companies with complex operations that chose Shopify on purpose.

Why this matters for your store

The reason to care isn't the names. It's what their presence does to the platform you're on.

A small store and a large brand on Shopify sit on the same layers: hosting that absorbs traffic spikes, the same checkout, and features first built for Plus, such as B2B, that later reach every plan YOU BIG BRAND FEATURES Built for Plus first B2B catalogs, payment terms and quantity rules now on every plan. CHECKOUT The same checkout Your customers pay the way the biggest brands' do. HOSTING Traffic spikes are Shopify's problem No servers to size before a launch or a sale.
Large brands and small stores sit on the same layers, so what gets built for one reaches the other.

When brands at this scale run on Shopify, Shopify has to build for their scale. The hosting that absorbs a big brand's product drop is the same hosting your store runs on. The checkout their customers use is the checkout yours use.

And features built for the biggest merchants tend to filter down. In April 2026, Shopify brought its core B2B features to the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans at no extra cost: company profiles for wholesale buyers, up to three custom catalogs with their own pricing, volume discounts and quantity rules, vaulted cards and payment terms. Those were refined on Shopify Plus for nearly four years first.

Worth knowing"Will I outgrow Shopify?" is usually a question about one missing feature, not the platform. Before planning a move, check whether an app, a Plus feature or a small custom build covers it. Our guide to apps, custom code or something in between helps you decide.

So if you're on Shopify and wondering whether you'll outgrow it, look at who else is here. They had the same question, the budget to go anywhere, and they chose Shopify. If you're weighing a move from another platform, the same brands made that move before you.
