Updated September 2026
Tinker is a free mobile app from Shopify that bundles more than 100 AI tools for making product photos, videos, logos, 3D models and ads. Shopify launched it on March 26, 2026, after an early-access period that began with the Winter '26 Edition. You don't need to be a Shopify merchant to use it, though it's clearly built for people who sell things.
One thing to clear up first: there's also a Shopify theme called Tinker in the Theme Store. This isn't that. The app is a separate product for creating content, and it doesn't change your store.
What Tinker does
Tinker sits on top of AI models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and others, but you never choose a model. You choose what you want to make, and the tools are named that way: Product Studio Shot, Product Editorial Shot, Social Media Ad Generator, Virtual Try-on Generator, Product Morph Video and so on. Each shows example results before you start, so you know whether you're getting a clean studio cutout or a lifestyle scene.
The bigger idea is that Shopify wrote the prompts. Instead of typing a paragraph and hoping, you fill in a few fields, upload a product photo if the tool needs one, and the app builds the prompt behind the scenes. Tinker also uses context from your earlier creations to keep things visually consistent, so a logo and a set of product shots made in the same app should look like they belong together.
Everything you make lands on the app's Artifacts screen, with a version history as you refine things. From there you download it to your phone.
Is Tinker free?
Yes. Shopify says the app is free to download and use, with no paid plan. It does have monthly usage limits that refresh automatically; Shopify calls them generous but doesn't publish the numbers. If you hit the limit, you wait for the next month rather than paying for more.
You sign up with email, Google or Apple, or with your existing Shopify account. Shopify's announcement says it's open to anyone 13 or older.
Can you use Tinker on a PC?
No. Tinker is mobile only, for iOS and Android, and Shopify hasn't announced a web or desktop version. That suits solo founders who run their business from their phone. It's less comfortable for detailed creative work, where a bigger screen makes flaws easier to spot. A workaround: create on the phone, then review the downloads on your computer before anything goes live.
Where it's useful
Shopify's announcement highlights two early users. Lena, who runs the jewelry brand Loire, said professional shots would have cost her about $50 each, and she made more than 150 product images in her first month with Tinker. Yukiko, the solo founder of the supplement brand Allie Beauty Protein, needed product shots where the legally required nutrition text on the label came out right, which many image generators get wrong. She queues up batches on her commute and reviews them when she arrives.
Where it fits best:
- Lifestyle and seasonal scenes around a product you've already photographed properly.
- Social posts and short ad videos, where you need volume and speed more than perfection.
- Launch placeholders and mood images while you wait for a real shoot.
- Logos and brand ideas for a new store, as a starting point for a designer or for yourself.
Where it falls short
AI images are improving fast, but some categories still need real photos. If customers need to see how fabric drapes on a body, the texture of food, or how furniture sits in a real room, a generated image can feel slightly wrong even when nobody can say why. And a product photo must never show something the product isn't: a different color, a bigger size, a finish it doesn't have. That's how you get returns and bad reviews.
Check every result at full size before you publish. Look at product edges, reflections, hands, and above all any text on labels or packaging. Something that looks fine on a phone can be obviously off on a desktop product page.
How to get Tinker images onto your store
- Start from a good photo. Tools that use your product work best with a clear, well-lit shot on a plain background. Our guide to editing product images for Shopify covers how to take one.
- Generate and pick. Make a few versions and keep the one where the product looks most like itself.
- Download it from the Artifacts screen to your phone.
- Upload it to the product in the Shopify mobile app or admin: open the product, add it in the Media section, and drag it after your main photo.
- Add alt text that describes what's in the image. Click the image to open the media editor, where you can also crop it to match your other photos.
If you'd rather stay inside the Shopify admin, the media editor there can also remove or replace a background and generate new scenes from a short prompt. Tinker is the better choice when you want video, ads or many variations at once.
How it compares to the tools you already use
| Tinker | Design tools like Canva | Standalone AI image or video apps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, with monthly limits | Free tier, paid plans | Usually paid or credit-based |
| Prompt writing | Not needed | Not needed for templates | Needed for good results |
| Layout and text control | Limited | Strong | Limited |
| Where you work | Phone | Browser, desktop, phone | Varies |
| Best for | Fast product scenes, ads, short videos | Banners, posts, anything with text | Fine control over style |
The trade-off is control. Tinker is quick: describe what you want, get a usable result, move on. If you already have a creative workflow you like, it may feel too simple. If you don't, it's the easiest place to start, and it adds new tools as new models arrive, so you don't have to keep track of them yourself.
