Shopify POS version 10, released in April 2025, was the first big redesign of the point-of-sale app in years. It changed how staff move around the app, how search works, how the cart looks, and it let you put your own branding on the lock screen and the customer-facing display. Shopify has kept building on it since: the app moved to version 11 in February 2026 and was on 11.16 by the end of September 2026.
This guide covers what the version 10 redesign actually changed, what has been added since, and how to set up the branding features that most stores still haven't touched.
The short answer
- Navigation: tablets got a vertical navigation bar with one-tap access to screens like Register, Connectivity and Lock screen. On phones, the cart moved into the main navigation.
- Search: inline search across Orders, Products, Customers, Drafts and Staff, with results for that list without jumping between screens.
- Cart: a header that shows whether you're working on a new order or a draft, and room for more line items at once.
- Lock screen: your own logo and background image, set from the Shopify admin.
- Customer display: your logo, background and brand colors on POS Terminal and on Android devices running the Customer View app.
Everything in version 10 is included with the app. You don't turn it on; you update the app. Some later features, noted below, need a POS Pro location.
What the version 10 redesign changed
A cleaner layout
Shopify's own description is "cleaner layouts and more accessible information." In practice, screens carry less chrome and the things staff need during a sale, like the cart and the total, sit where they're easy to find. If your team learned POS on an older version, expect a short period of re-learning where buttons live, not new workflows.
Navigation built for the counter
On a tablet, a vertical bar down the side of the screen gives quick access to Register, Connectivity and Lock screen. On a phone, Cart is now in the main navigation, so staff selling on the floor get back to the sale in one tap.
Search that stays on the page
Search works inline on Orders, Products, Customers, Drafts and Staff. You search within the list you're looking at and get results for that list, rather than being sent to a separate search screen. Later versions improved this further: since 11.1, results show the matching text (a SKU or barcode, for example), and since 11.16 you can filter results by products, orders or customers.
A cart that tells you what it is
The cart header changes depending on whether you're building a new order or working on a draft, which matters when staff pick up a draft someone else started. The cart also shows more line items at once, which helps with large orders and exchanges.
Your brand on the lock screen and customer display
This is the part most merchants searched for, and the part most stores haven't set up. The lock screen can carry your logo and a background image or color. Customer-facing screens can show your logo and background media while idle, and your brand colors during checkout. Both are covered step by step below.
What's new since version 10
Shopify ships POS updates roughly every few weeks and summarizes them in its Retail Roundup. These are the changes that matter most for day-to-day selling:
| Version | What changed | Needs POS Pro? |
|---|---|---|
| 11.0 (Feb 2026) | Actions open in a side panel so the cart stays visible; multi-select to edit several items at once; larger payment buttons and an inline number pad | No |
| 11.5 (Apr 2026) | Returns, exchanges and refunds run through the main cart instead of a separate flow; scannable discount codes | No, but staff need the new return permissions |
| 11.9 (Jun 2026) | A Devices list in the admin showing every POS device, its app version and location, with remote log-out | No |
| 11.10 (Jul 2026) | Suggested cash amounts, a single receipt template editor, and a connectivity health screen | No |
| 11.11 (Jul 2026) | Recent carts: carts save automatically and can be picked up on any device at the location; approve a new device from one that's already signed in | No |
| 11.16 (Sep 2026) | Create local delivery orders and complete scheduled stock counts in POS | Yes |
How to add your logo to the POS lock screen
- In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels → Point of Sale.
- In the Customize the in-store experience section, click Edit for the POS app.
- In Views, select Lock screen.
- In the Logo section, click Select image, choose your file and click Done. The logo must be SVG, PNG or WEBP and at least 512 pixels.
- Under Background, choose Image (WEBP, PNG, JPEG or GIF, under 15 MB) or Color (pick one or type a hex code).
- Use Preview options to check it on a tablet and a phone, then click Save.
Use a logo with a transparent background, and check the preview on both device types. A wide wordmark that looks fine on a tablet can end up tiny on a phone.
How to brand the customer-facing display
The customer display is the screen your customer sees: the built-in display on POS Terminal, or an Android tablet or POS device running Shopify's Customer View app next to your register.
- Go to Sales channels → Point of Sale. In Customize the in-store experience, click Edit for Customer display.
- Idle screen. This is what shows when nobody is checking out. For the Foreground, use an image (your logo: SVG, PNG or WEBP, at least 512 pixels) or up to 250 characters of text. For the Background, use an image (PNG or JPEG; Shopify recommends 1080 x 1920 pixels, portrait) with an adjustable overlay, or a solid color.
- Show card brands. Displays the card logos you accept. It needs Shopify Payments.
- Checkout screens. Pick a primary background color and an accent color for buttons and highlights. They apply to the cart summary, receipt options and thank you screens. You can also hide product images on the cart summary and write your own thank you message.
- Use Preview options to switch between tablet and POS Terminal, then save.
Keep the thank you message short and useful: a returns window, your social handle, or a reason to come back. It's on screen for a few seconds.
Saving carts: draft orders and recent carts
People who searched for this article often wanted to know how to park a sale. There are now two ways, and they solve different problems.
- Draft orders keep a cart for later, even days later. Tap the menu icon in the cart and choose Create draft order; load it again with Load draft order → Load to cart. Drafts can be opened at any location and in the admin. This is a POS Pro feature, and inactive drafts are deleted after a year (more on that here).
- Recent carts (version 11.11) save automatically while staff work, and any device at the same location can open and finish them. They're meant for the same shift: the customer who goes to try something on, or the sale that starts on the floor and finishes at the till. They clear after 24 hours by default, and staff need the recent carts permission.
If the new features don't show up
- The app isn't updated. Features arrive with the app version. Update Shopify POS from the App Store or Google Play on every device. The Devices list in the POS channel shows each device's version, but only for devices on 11.9 or later.
- It's still rolling out. Shopify releases some features gradually. If a colleague's store has it and yours doesn't, it may simply not have reached you yet.
- It's a Pro feature. Draft orders, local delivery orders, scheduled stock counts and inventory transfers need the location to be on POS Pro.
- Staff lack the permission. Returns in the cart, recent carts and device setup each have their own permission. Check the staff member's POS role.
- The customer display won't pair. Customer View pairs over your local network, so both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- The logo is rejected or blurry. Check the file type and the 512-pixel minimum, and use SVG if you have it.
One date to note: if your organization uses two-step authentication, some POS devices need staff with setup or admin roles to log out and back in with email, password and two-step authentication by January 4, 2027.
Common questions
What is the latest version of Shopify POS?
At the end of September 2026 it was version 11.16. Version 11.0 arrived in February 2026. Shopify lists every release in its Retail Roundup.
Do I have to pay for the version 10 features?
No. The redesign, navigation, search, cart header, lock screen and customer display branding come with the app. A few later features, such as draft orders and local delivery orders, need a POS Pro location.
Can I use a different logo on each location's lock screen?
Shopify's documentation describes one lock screen design set from the POS editor, and customer display settings apply to all locations. Plan your branding as store-wide.
Which devices can show a branded customer display?
POS Terminal's built-in customer screen, and compatible Android tablets or Android POS devices running the Customer View app, paired with your register over the same local network.
Where do I customize the POS lock screen?
In the admin under Sales channels → Point of Sale, click Edit in Customize the in-store experience, then choose Lock screen under Views.
How do I see which version each device is running?
Open Devices in the POS channel in your admin. Devices running 11.9 or later appear there with their app version, location and status.
