You Can Now Customize Product Pages in the Shop App

Shopify just added something to the Shop channel that's been missing for a while: the ability to customize what your product detail pages look like inside the Shop app and shop.app on the web.

Until now, your product pages in Shop were pretty much just your product data displayed in a standard layout. You couldn't add lifestyle imagery, videos, cross-sells, or any of the branded content you're used to having on your actual online store. What customers saw in the Shop app was a stripped-down version of your product page with no way to make it feel like your brand.

Shopify just fixed that. They added blocks in the Shop Editor that let you add rich content sections below your product details. There are five block types available:

  • Image for lifestyle shots, size guides, or brand visuals
  • Video to show the product in use
  • Slideshow for carousels of images and video with text overlays
  • Product Group to cross-sell up to 4 related products
  • Shoppable Video where you tag products directly in the video so customers can buy from it

You can add up to two sections per product detail page, and you can set up product templates to apply different customizations to different product types. So your running shoes can have a sizing chart section while your hats get a style guide. Same store, different layouts depending on what makes sense for the product.

The Shop app gets real traffic, and a lot of merchants have been ignoring it because the product pages were so locked down. Now that you can add a lifestyle image, a cross-sell, or a video showing the product in use, it's worth spending ten minutes in the Shop Editor to see what your pages actually look like in there.

To set this up, open the Shop channel in your Shopify admin and go to the Shop Editor. Full details in the Shopify Help Center and the Shopify Changelog.
