"Buy 2, save 10%. Buy 3, save 15%." A quantity break is the simplest way to turn one-candle orders into three-candle orders, and Black Friday is when shoppers are most ready to stock up. Black Friday 2026 is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30, so there's still time to set tiers up properly, do the math, and test them before the traffic arrives.
This guide covers how to run "buy more, save more" on Shopify: how to build quantity breaks with Shopify's own discounts, how they interact with your other Black Friday offers, how to check the margin on every tier, and how to show the tiers on the product page, which is the part Shopify doesn't do for you.
The short version
- Shopify can do quantity breaks without an app. Create one automatic Amount off products discount per tier, each with a Minimum quantity of items. When a cart qualifies for several, Shopify applies the best one.
- Watch the limits. A store can have 25 active automatic discounts, and outside Shopify Plus only one product discount can apply to the same item.
- Do the margin math per tier, and remember that a discount given to someone who would have bought three anyway is pure cost.
- Shopify doesn't show the tiers on the product page. Write them into the page yourself, or use an app that adds a tier table.
If you're still deciding which kind of offer to run (tiers, BOGO, spend thresholds or bundles), start with our overview of how to get Shopify customers to buy more per order. This post goes deep on one of them.
How quantity breaks work with Shopify's built-in discounts
Shopify's discount types don't include a "tiered" discount. Its help centre points to apps for advanced solutions such as tiered discounts. But you can build a tier ladder out of ordinary discounts, because of one rule: when two or more discounts apply but can't be combined, the best discount for the customer's cart is always applied.
So you create one automatic discount per tier. A cart with three candles qualifies for both "buy 2" and "buy 3", and Shopify picks 15% because it's the better deal:
Set up tiers step by step
- In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts and click Create discount.
- Choose Amount off products.
- Under Method, pick Automatic discount, so nobody has to type a code.
- Give it a Title the shopper will understand, such as "Buy 3, save 15%".
- In Discount value, choose a percentage (a fixed amount works too, but percentages scale more predictably across prices).
- Under Applies to, choose Specific collections or Specific products.
- Set the minimum requirement to Minimum quantity of items and enter the tier's quantity.
- Under Combinations, leave Product discounts unticked so your tiers compete rather than stack. Tick Order discounts and Shipping discounts if you want tiers to work alongside a spend threshold or free shipping.
- Set the Active dates (start and end), then Save. Repeat for each tier with the same products and dates.
Two details catch people out. First, if a discount applies to specific products or a collection, only those items count toward the minimum quantity, but they all count together. One red and two blue candles in the Candles collection make three items. That's usually what you want ("any 3 candles"). For "3 of the same scent", you'd need a separate set of discounts for each product.
Second, the count grows fast. Three tiers for one collection use three automatic discounts. Three tiers each for five product lines use fifteen, and Shopify's limit is 25 active automatic discounts, a total that includes discounts created by apps.
How tiers interact with your other Black Friday offers
Most stores run more than one promotion in late November, so decide in advance what happens when they meet. Shopify groups discounts into product, order and shipping discounts, and each discount's Combinations setting decides what it can be used with. The rules that matter for quantity breaks:
- Tier + sitewide sale on the same item. Both are product discounts. Unless you're on Shopify Plus, only one product discount can apply to a given item, so the shopper gets whichever is better, not both.
- Tier + spend threshold. "Buy 3, save 15%" (product) can combine with "10% off orders over $100" (order) if both allow it. Product discounts are calculated first, then the order discount applies to the reduced subtotal.
- Tier + free shipping. Product and shipping discounts can combine if both allow it.
- Tier + a code from your email. A customer can use up to 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code on an order, but each code still follows its own combination settings.
On Plus, if you let product discounts stack on the same item, add up the worst case first. Our post on how Shopify discounts stack covers the combination rules in more detail.
Do the margin math before you pick the tiers
A tier only earns money if it changes what people buy. Take a candle that sells for $20, costs $8 to make, and costs about $5 per order to pick and pack, whether the order has one candle or three. These are example numbers; use your own.
Profit per order goes from $7 to $37, because the packing cost is spread across more units. Three checks keep the ladder honest:
- Deepest tier vs gross margin. At 25% off, this candle still makes $7 before packing ($15 minus $8). If your product's margin is thin, the deepest tier might sell at a loss once shipping and payment fees are in.
- Where your orders already sit. Check your recent orders. If lots of people already buy three, a "buy 3" tier just discounts them. Start the first tier one step above your most common quantity.
- Free shipping thresholds. If a three-candle order also crosses your free-shipping line, the tier and free shipping stack on the same order. Count both.
Three tiers is plenty, and each step should be a real jump.
Show the tiers on the product page
This is where Shopify's built-in discounts fall short. Automatic discounts apply in the cart and at checkout, and nothing on the product page tells the shopper that a third candle would save them 15%. A discount the shopper only discovers at checkout doesn't change what they put in the cart.
Without an app, you can still say it yourself:
- On the product page: add a text block near the price in the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize) with the tiers written out: "Buy 2, save 10% · Buy 3, save 15% · Buy 6, save 25%". Use the product template for the collection you're discounting so it only shows where it's true.
- Site-wide: an announcement bar with the offer and end date. Our guide to countdown timers and announcement bars for Black Friday covers how to do it.
The catch with typed text is keeping it in sync. If you change a tier in Discounts and forget the product page, you've promised a price the checkout won't honor. Put "check product page text" on your list for every discount change.
When an app is worth it
An app earns its place when you want a real tier table on the product page, more tiers or product lines than the 25-discount limit comfortably fits, or tiers per variant or per customer group. We build Discounts & Bundles for this. You set up quantity breaks (and BOGO, spend thresholds, mix & match and bundles) in the app, target them by product, variant, collection or customer tag, and schedule them with start and end dates. Theme blocks show the discount table and offer badges on the product page, and discounts apply automatically at checkout through Shopify Functions.
Shopify built-in vs an app
| Shopify discounts | Discounts & Bundles (ours) | |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity tiers | One automatic discount per tier | Tiers set up in the app |
| Tiers shown on the product page | Only if you write them in | Discount table and badges from theme blocks |
| Target specific products or collections | Yes | Yes, plus variants and customer tags |
| Start and end dates | Yes | Yes, plus recurring weekly windows |
| Applied automatically at checkout | Yes | Yes, through Shopify Functions |
| Cost | Included | Free to install; paid plans from $4.99/month, 7-day free trial |
For three tiers on one collection, Shopify's own discounts are enough. Current app plans are on the App Store listing.
If something doesn't work
- The discount doesn't show in the cart. Check the discount is active (the start date has passed, the end date hasn't) and that the items in the cart are in the products or collection under Applies to. Items outside it don't count toward the minimum.
- The shopper got the lower tier. Another product discount on the same item was better for that cart, or the higher tier's minimum isn't met by eligible items. Open each tier and compare products and quantities.
- "Couldn't be used with your existing discounts." The shopper entered a code whose combination settings don't allow it alongside the automatic tier (or the other way round). Decide which combination you want and tick the matching box on both discounts.
- You can't create another automatic discount. You've hit 25 active. End or delete old ones, including leftovers from past campaigns and app-created discounts.
Common questions
Can Shopify do buy more, save more without an app?
Yes. Create one automatic Amount off products discount per tier, each with a minimum quantity of items. Shopify applies the best tier the cart qualifies for. What it doesn't do is show the tiers on the product page.
Can the quantity break apply to mixed products?
Yes, and by default it does: all eligible items count together toward the minimum. If the discount applies to a collection, any three items from that collection meet a "buy 3" tier.
Will my quantity discount stack with a Black Friday sale code?
If both are product discounts on the same item, only on Shopify Plus, and only if you allow it. On other plans, the customer gets the better of the two. A quantity tier can combine with order and shipping discounts on any plan if both discounts allow it.
How many tiers should I offer?
Two or three. Start the first one just above your most common order quantity, make each step a meaningful jump, and check the margin at the deepest tier.
Do automatic discounts work in the Shopify POS?
Amount off discounts have an Also offer on Point of Sale (POS Pro locations only) option when you create them. Check it if your shop counter runs the same promotion.
How do I stop customers buying huge quantities at the deepest tier?
Shopify's store-wide add-to-cart limit caps how many units of each variant fit in one cart. Our guide to Shopify's add-to-cart limit explains how to set it, and what to use if you need a per-product or per-customer limit instead.
