Shopify Just Made Shipping Setup Simpler
Shopify pushed a quiet update that merchants who manage their own shipping rates will appreciate. Shipping options (previously called "rates") got a few improvements that give you more control over what customers see at checkout.
Here's what changed:
You can now add a custom description to each shipping option that displays at checkout. So instead of customers just seeing "Standard Shipping — $5.99," you can add context like "Delivered in 5-7 business days" or "Ships from our warehouse in Portland." Small thing, but it helps set expectations and reduces post-purchase support questions about delivery timing.
Each shipping option can now include a separate transit time, giving customers clearer information about when their order will arrive without you needing to stuff that into the option name.
You can also now offer free shipping automatically when an order hits a minimum value, configured directly on the shipping option itself. Previously, setting up conditional free shipping required workarounds. Now you can set a threshold (say, $75) and the free shipping option appears at checkout automatically when the cart qualifies.
And weight or price range conditions can now be set within a single shipping option rather than creating multiple rates to cover different scenarios.
None of this is a major overhaul, but if you've ever been frustrated by how rigid Shopify's shipping setup felt, these are welcome improvements. The kind of update that saves you time every week without making a headline.
