A few pumpkins drifting down the home page, snow in December, fireworks on New Year's Eve: a little motion makes a store feel like it knows what time of year it is. Too much of it, and your store feels slow, the Add to cart button is hard to tap, and shoppers who are sensitive to motion leave.
This guide covers how to add holiday effects to a Shopify store without those problems, starting with Halloween (Saturday, October 31, 2026) and planning ahead for Christmas and New Year: what your theme can do alone, how to set up Holiday Decorations, the free app we build for seasonal effects, and how to check that your store is still fast afterwards.
The short version
- Your theme can do the still part: a seasonal banner image, a Halloween announcement bar and a color change are all in the theme editor, with no app.
- Moving effects (falling items, snow, lights, fireworks) need an app or custom code. Shopify themes don't include them.
- Use app blocks, not pasted scripts. Holiday Decorations adds each effect as a block you place, hide or remove in the theme editor, page by page.
- Keep it light: one effect per page, nothing covering Add to cart, nothing on the cart, and a check of your web performance reports before and after.
- Plan the take-down: Halloween comes down on November 1, well before Black Friday on November 27.
What you can do with your theme alone
Before adding any motion, use what's already in the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize). For Halloween, that usually means:
- A seasonal image banner on the home page, pointing to a Halloween collection.
- Your announcement bar with the offer and your last order date.
- A color change in your theme settings: orange buttons or a dark background for October, back to normal on November 1.
None of this adds scripts to your store. If you haven't planned the rest of October yet, our Halloween plan for Shopify stores covers the collection, the scheduled discount and shipping cut-offs, and five Halloween campaigns worth borrowing from has ideas for the marketing side.
If you'd like to prepare a whole seasonal look in advance, duplicate your theme first. In Online Store, open the menu next to your theme and choose Duplicate. The copy is named "Copy of" plus your theme's name, and you can edit and preview it without touching the live store. Shopify keeps up to 20 themes in your library, so delete an old one if you're at the limit. If you do switch themes, app blocks aren't active on the new theme by default, so you'll need to add your effects again.
Plan the season before you decorate
Holiday effects work best as a short burst around each date, not a decoration that stays up from October to January:
Black Friday 2026 is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30, your busiest days. Have Halloween gone well before, and hold the Christmas effects until the sale is over.
How to add Halloween effects with Holiday Decorations
Holiday Decorations adds its effects as app blocks. Shopify describes app blocks as app features you can "add, remove, preview, reposition, and customize" in the theme editor, so nothing is pasted into your theme code. The app has these blocks:
- Falling Items: a cascade of falling decorations. You choose the type and speed. For Halloween, pumpkins or autumn leaves.
- Festive Cursor: the mouse pointer changes to a holiday icon when shoppers hover. It's a desktop effect, since phones don't have a cursor.
- Flying Santa: Santa and his reindeer cross the screen, with an option to upload your own image instead.
- Snowfall, Holiday Lights and Fireworks for winter and New Year.
- Text Banner - Two Color: a festive two-color heading like "Happy Holidays", with optional twinkle and letter animation.
To set it up:
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store and approve the permissions.
- Choose your theme on the welcome screen. This is the theme the effects will appear on.
- Click Activate the App. This opens the Shopify theme editor.
- Pick the page from the page menu at the top of the editor: the home page, a collection template, or a Halloween landing page.
- Click Add block (or Add section), then choose Falling Items from the Apps list. The blocks are listed under Holiday Decors - Pasilobus.
- Adjust the settings in the block panel: the type of item, how fast it falls and how large it is.
- Click Save, then open the store on your phone and look at it.
Each block you add shows its own settings. Flying Santa, for example, has Speed, Size, Z-Index and Custom Santa. Z-Index decides whether the effect sits in front of or behind the rest of the page, which matters more than it sounds: set it low enough that decorations pass behind your header and buttons, and shoppers can always tap what they came for.
If you're after confetti rather than decorations, that's a separate app of ours: Confetti fires when a shopper adds to cart or places an order. See confetti on Shopify.
Keep it fast: effects that don't slow your store
Shopify's own advice on animations is plain: "Animations can slow down pages," so compare your web performance before and after you turn them on. Here's how to do that, and how to keep effects from getting in the way.
Measure before and after
In your Shopify admin, go to Analytics → Reports and search for "contentful", "next" or "cumulative". That brings up the three Core Web Vitals reports, built from real visitors to your store:
| Report | What it measures | Good | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | How fast the main content loads | 2.5 seconds or less | Over 4 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | How fast the page responds to a tap or click | 200 ms or less | Over 500 ms |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | How much the page jumps around | 0.1 or less | 0.25 or more |
Note your numbers first. The charts mark app installs and theme changes with numbered lines, so you can see whether anything moved. The data can lag by up to 36 hours, so give it two days, and test early in October, not Halloween week. For a wider look at why this matters, see why speed matters for your Shopify store.
Put effects where they help
- One effect per page. Each extra one is more to load and more to look at.
- Fewer, smaller items on product pages. Or none. The product photo is the decoration there.
- Check Add to cart on a phone. On a small screen, falling items cross the buttons more often. If they sit in front, lower the Z-Index.
- Leave the cart alone. Shoppers there are about to pay.
Think about motion-sensitive shoppers
Some people find moving backgrounds distracting or physically uncomfortable. The web accessibility guidelines (WCAG) ask that anything moving automatically for more than five seconds, alongside other content, can be paused, stopped or hidden, and continuous snowfall falls into that category. Keep effects slow and sparse, keep them off pages with long text or forms, and ask our support team how an effect behaves when a visitor has reduced motion switched on.
What's next: Christmas and New Year
After Black Friday, the winter effects take over:
- Early December: Snowfall or Holiday Lights on the home page. Lights frame the page rather than moving across it, so they're the gentlest option.
- Mid December: Flying Santa on the home page, or your own sleigh image with Custom Santa. Add a Text Banner - Two Color for "Happy Holidays" in your brand colors.
- December 31: swap to Fireworks for New Year's Eve, a Thursday in 2026.
- January 2: hide everything. A store still snowing in mid-January looks unattended.
The same approach works all year, from falling hearts for Valentine's Day to fireworks on the Fourth of July.
Shopify built-in vs Holiday Decorations
| Your theme on its own | With Holiday Decorations | |
|---|---|---|

| Lights, fireworks, flying Santa | No | Holiday Lights, Fireworks, Flying Santa |
| Different effects on different pages | Not applicable | Yes, one block per template |
| Turn off after the holiday | Edit each setting back | Hide the block in the theme editor |
| Cost | Included | Free |
If something doesn't work
- The effect doesn't appear on the store. Check you clicked Save, that the block isn't hidden (eye icon), and that you added it to the page you're looking at. Effects added to the home page don't show on product pages.
- Holiday Decorations isn't in the Apps list. App blocks only work with compatible Online Store 2.0 themes, and only on the theme you chose during setup. If you've switched themes, add the blocks again on the new one.
- Decorations cover buttons or the menu. Lower the block's Z-Index, reduce the size, or move the effect off that template.
- The store feels slower. Remove effects one at a time and compare the reports after a day or two. Shopify notes that uninstalling an app doesn't automatically remove its code from your theme, so remove the blocks in the theme editor too.

Common questions
How do I add holiday effects to my Shopify store?
Your theme covers banners, announcement bars and colors. For moving effects like snow, falling pumpkins, lights or fireworks, install an effects app that works through app blocks, add the block in Online Store → Themes → Customize on the pages you want, and save.
Do holiday effects slow down a Shopify store?
Any animation adds some work for the browser, and Shopify recommends comparing performance before and after turning animations on. Keep to one light effect per page, and check your LCP, INP and CLS reports under Analytics → Reports a day or two after you add it.
Can I use custom holiday effects, like my own image?
Yes, within limits. In Holiday Decorations, Flying Santa has a Custom Santa setting for your own image, and the Text Banner block takes your own text and colors.
Can I show effects on only some pages?
Yes. Each effect is a block on a specific template, so you can decorate the home page and a Halloween collection and leave product pages and the cart plain.
When should I take Halloween decorations down?
November 1. That leaves more than three weeks to switch your store over for Black Friday on November 27, 2026, without seasonal effects competing with your sale.
Do the effects work on mobile?
Yes, the effects are built to adapt to phones and tablets. Festive Cursor changes the mouse pointer, so it only shows where there is one. Always check Add to cart on a phone.
Decorate for Halloween this month
Install Holiday Decorations from the Shopify App Store. It's free, it works from the theme editor, and you can try Falling Items on one page in a few minutes before deciding where else it belongs. The product page shows every effect. If you'd rather have someone plan and set up your store's whole holiday season, from Halloween through New Year, talk to us.
